Instead, I found a number of smaller recommendations for individual action.<\/p>\n<p>To reduce exposure from food:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2010\/HEALTH\/07\/02\/how.make.grilling.safe\/index.html?hpt=C2\" target=\"_blank\">CNN.com<\/a> has suggestions on safer grilling techniques, including the use of gas and propane instead of charcoal or using chimney starters instead of lighter fuel. Photo by Michael Fienen- <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc-sa\/2.0\/legalcode\" target=\"_blank\">license<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Cutting general levels in your home:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.idph.state.il.us\/envhealth\/factsheets\/polycyclicaromatichydrocarbons.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Illinois Dept. of Public Health<\/a> recommends using cedar chips in place of mothballs.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.nsw.gov.au\/soe\/soe2003\/chapter3\/chp_3.4.htm\" target=\"_blank\">New South Wales EPA<\/a> recommends reducing the use of wood for heating.<\/li>\n<li>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uef.fi\/en\/-\/puun-pienpoltto-on-merkittava-pah-paastolahde\" target=\"_blank\">recent research by Kati Nuutinen<\/a>, there are several technological options for reducing PAH-production by wood-fired appliances which can help make the air in your home cleaner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Reducing overall pollution levels in air, water, and soil:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pca.state.mn.us\/water\/stormwater-great-lakes-coal-tar-sealcoat-pah-reduction\" target=\"_blank\">Minnesota Pollution Control Agency<\/a> promotes reducing the use of coal tar sealcoats for asphalt.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/ccceh.org\/our-research\/research-studies\/air-pollution\" target=\"_blank\">Columbia Center for Children\u2019s Environmental Health<\/a> advocates for better emission controls in vehicles and limits to engine idling.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breastcancerfund.org\/clear-science\/radiation-chemicals-and-breast-cancer\/polycyclic-aromatic-hydrocarbons.html\" target=\"_blank\">Breast Cancer Fund<\/a> suggests we can each cut down on vehicle emissions by biking, walking, or using hybrid\/electric or public transportation.<\/li>\n<li>Another option for reducing PAH emissions is a familiar message from an old friend- don\u2019t start forest fires.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some of these suggestions probably seem common sense, but they are worth repeating. And it does really seem like each of us has an individual responsibility to cut back on the emissions we, personally, generate.
